AI calling agents for telecalling teams: what works, and how to start.

A field guide to AI calling agents and voice AI for business in India: inbound vs outbound, Indian languages, dialer and CRM groundwork, compliance, and lessons from about 12,000 calls on Airix.

01What an AI calling agent is

An AI calling agent is a voice agent on a phone line. Under the hood it is three steps on repeat: speech-to-text turns what the caller says into words, a language model decides what to say or do, and text-to-speech says it back. Good ones do this fast enough that the pause feels like a person thinking, and they can act during the call: check a slot, update a lead, send a WhatsApp confirmation, or transfer to a human.

It is not a replacement for a good telecaller. It is a way to stop good telecallers spending their day on calls that don't need them.

02Where voice AI works today

Confirmations and reminders

“Your site visit is tomorrow at 11. Shall I keep it?” Short, predictable, high volume, and the cost of a no-show is real.

After-hours and overflow inbound

Calls that would otherwise ring out at night or at peak times get answered, logged and booked for a callback, instead of becoming a missed lead.

First qualification on outbound

Budget, location, timeline, and whether the person is the decision-maker. The agent asks, records, and transfers warm leads to a person while they are still on the line.

Summaries of human calls

The lowest-risk start of all: no customer ever talks to AI. Every human call is transcribed and summarised into the CRM, so managers see what happened and nobody types notes.

03Where it still struggles

  • Negotiation and objections. Price conversations need judgement and trust. Hand them to people.
  • Noisy lines and poor networks. Speech recognition degrades fast on bad audio. Test on real recordings from your own customers, not studio samples.
  • Mixed-language speech. Customers switch between Tamil and English, or Hindi and English, mid-sentence. Names, addresses and numbers are where errors cluster.
  • Long, open conversations. The longer and less structured the call, the more ways it can drift.

04The groundwork most projects skip

You cannot measure or improve calls you do not record. Before any AI speaks to a customer, you need a dialer that logs every call, outcome and recording, and syncs it to the CRM. That data is what you test the AI against, and the CRM is what the AI acts on.

That is the order we followed with Airix, the telecalling and dialer platform we built for Manju Groups' sales operations: a fast calling interface first, call logging and CRM sync second, and the groundwork for AI voice agents on top.

With that history in place, a voice agent has real calls to learn from and be tested against, and a CRM it can update correctly from the first day.

05Indian languages

Voice AI in English, Tamil and Hindi is workable today, and that is what we build for. The practical advice is to test with your callers, not a demo script: record real calls (with consent), build a set of a few hundred examples with the tricky parts, like names, area names, phone numbers and amounts, and measure accuracy on those. Let the agent confirm anything critical back to the caller (“That's 98400, correct?”) rather than assume.

06Compliance in India

Automated calling sits under the same rules as any commercial calling. Follow TRAI's regulations on commercial communication: respect Do Not Disturb preferences, use the number series and registrations required for your type of call, and keep proof of consent. Tell callers when calls are recorded. Many businesses also choose to tell callers they are speaking to an AI assistant, which tends to build trust rather than lose it. Rules change, so have someone check your setup against the current regulations before launch.

07How to start, in four phases

  1. Log and summarise. Every human call recorded, transcribed and summarised into the CRM.
  2. Low-risk calls. AI handles confirmations, reminders and after-hours inbound, with a callback booked when it can't help.
  3. First touch on outbound. AI qualifies and transfers warm leads live to a telecaller.
  4. Expand what works. Add call types one at a time, only where the numbers say it is working.

Track connect rate, qualification accuracy, transfer rate, cost per qualified lead and complaints. If a phase doesn't improve them, don't move to the next.

08Questions people ask

What is an AI calling agent?

A voice agent that makes or answers phone calls: it converts speech to text, uses an AI model to decide what to say or do, speaks back, and can act during the call, such as updating your CRM, booking a slot or transferring to a person.

Can AI make calls in Tamil or Hindi?

Yes. Voice AI in English, Tamil and Hindi works today. Accuracy depends on audio quality and on mixed-language speech, so test it on real recordings from your own customers before going live.

Is AI calling legal in India?

Automated calls follow the same rules as other commercial calls: TRAI's commercial communication regulations, Do Not Disturb preferences, the right number series and registrations for your call type, and consent. Check your setup against current rules before launch.

Will AI calling agents replace telecallers?

Not in practice. They take over short, repetitive calls and first qualification so telecallers spend their time on conversations that need judgement, such as objections, negotiation and closing.

How much does an AI calling agent cost to run?

Running cost is mostly per minute: telephony, speech recognition, voice synthesis and the AI model. Totals depend on call length and volume, which is why we size them per call type during discovery.
